Tip: Collect rocks of different sizes, shapes, and textures. Before starting to paint, examine and rotate them, unleash your imagination, and figure out what patterns you can paint on them. You can find rocks anywhere on the street, but you can also come across more unique pieces while walking in the forest or by a lake.
When choosing brushes, think about what you want to paint. Purchase both thicker and thinner brushes so that you can choose them while painting the rocks.
Choose acrylic paint, which is one of the easiest hobby paints to obtain. We can buy it from hobby stores or online. It’s worth buying a set because as a beginner rock painter, you will have several smaller tubes of paint available for your creations.
Steps:

STEP 1
LET’S GET CREATIVE! Unleash your imagination, start brainstorming while listening to good music, or take a walk in nature. Decide what pattern you want to paint. If we are making several rocks, it may be worth grouping them around a theme. Here are some easy patterns for beginners that we can easily realize: ladybug, butterfly, teddy bear head, bunny head, flower, rainbow, cloud, ice cream, mug etc. For creative inspiration, it’s worth checking out Pinterest, one of the largest inspiration sites. Enter „rock painting” into the search bar and look at the creations made by others. If possible, let’s not copy, as there’s nothing unique about that.
STEP 2
Clean the rocks thoroughly, using water, soap, and a small brush. If necessary, soak them to ensure that the dirt dissolves from even the tiny holes.
STEP 3
If we don’t like the original texture of the rocks – shaped by nature – prime the surface. We can use white acrylic paint, but feel free to experiment with other colors.
STEP 4
Sketch the desired pattern with a pencil. If we are unsure, let’s find the basic pattern on the internet. Open the browser, search for line drawings in the given theme, and draw them freehand on the rock.

STEP 5
Fill in the outlines with paints, being mindful of drying times. If we apply two colors directly next to each other, they can easily blend. We can speed up drying time by placing them in the sun or, in cold weather, placing them on a heater. A hairdryer can also be a good solution. Set it to medium heat and blow the air onto the painted surface from a distance.
STEP 6
Once we have finished painting the main elements, decorate them with small details. Use a thin brush for detailed decoration.
STEP 7
After complete drying, outline with an alcohol-based fine-tip marker if our pattern requires it. Personalize the finished decorative rocks! Write names, dates, or even short sentences on them. These artistically crafted rocks can be a gift for a relative, friend, or even a kindergarten teacher.
STEP 8
Finally, varnish the surface. For varnishing, use water-based hobby varnish, applying it thinly with a wide, flat brush. Wait for the surface to dry completely.
STEP +1
Find the perfect place for our painted rocks. Decorative rocks look great in flowerpots, flower beds, or even on a bookshelf. If we are giving them as a gift, accompany them with a slice of chocolate and wrap them in cellophane. There you have it, a simple and inexpensive gift made with heart and hands.

Don’t forget to take photos of the finished pieces and show them to your friends. Remember, there are no bad or ugly creations; the important thing is that we created them with heart and soul. Don’t be afraid to dive in; rock painting is a fun and easy way to engage in crafting activities.
